Through Unity, we plan to feature the tips and experiences of those we have met and this month we welcome 38 year old Alejandra from Colombia. Alejandra explains how she makes time for herself amidst her busy life, something many of us with families struggle to do. She also shares her recipe for her favourite natural face mask…
Originally from Colombia, Alejandra has lived in Switzerland for the past 13 years. She is a wife and Mother to 2 beautiful girls, she loves fashion and enjoys being creative in the kitchen; dining in her home is always a feast! Her cooking is inspired mainly by her South America upbringing and she often prepares ’empanadas’ (like pasties), ‘galletas de avena’ (like oat cakes), rice with chicken and ‘arepas’, pictured below. Alejandra loves to use turmeric, cinnamon, chilli, fresh ginger, and coconut milk in her cooking also.
Being a wife and mother means that Alejandra’s life can be very full but this doesn’t stop her from taking care of herself. She explains that this is something which is really important to her as when she takes care of herself, she can then give her best to her loved ones. Each week she will schedule in “me” time so she can pamper herself, catch up with friends, or go to the gym in order to stay fit and feel good.
In Colombia, the women are famous for being feminine and taking good care of their appearance. They will use natural ingredients for skincare such as honey and oats. Honey is naturally antibacterial, full of antioxidants and provides moisturising benefits; oats are good for absorbing excess oils on the skin and are often used to treat acne and for relieving irritated skin. Alejandra will create her own face masks at home and her favourite ingredients to use are honey and turmeric!
Alejandra’s Honey & Turmeric Mask
Simply mix 2 tbsp of honey and 1 tsp of turmeric powder in a bowl to make the mask which can be applied to the face using a brush or spatula. Turmeric can stain so be careful if you use your hands! You can also use aloe vera gel if you find honey too sticky. Leave on the skin for 10-15 minutes and remove thoroughly with warm water or a hot cloth.
Alejandra uses this mask weekly for its anti inflammatory and moisturising properties to keep her skin glowing! We love the simplicity of this mask and how it is made using ingredients that most of us will have in our kitchen.
